Advancing Motivational Interviewing Understanding and Skills
Brisbane, Melbourne, Christchurch, Auckland
After initial training in Motivational Interviewing (MI), practitioners are often left to wonder, “How do I advance these skills in everyday practice?”
Motivational Interviewing is a skill that improves with practice and feedback. To help facilitate moving towards greater proficiency in MI, we designed this innovative, one-day session to build understanding and skills. This interactive training will combine brief didactics, discussion, experiential activities, and self-reflection to encourage practitioner growth at all levels of experience. Drs David Rosengren (USA) and Joel Porter (Australia), internationally known trainers in MI, will take an exploratory approach to expand thinking and sharpen focus regarding MI concepts, skills and applications. They will integrate concepts from positive psychology, cognitive science and grit to design and facilitate powerful learning experiences. Come expecting to learn something new, try something different, and walk away feeling energized and challenged. Click on he following links for more detail: |

ICMI Conference:
The premier international scientific conference focusing on Motivational Interviewing has been held in four previous locations – Interlaken, Switzerland (2008); Stockholm, Sweden (2010); Venice, Italy (2012); and Amsterdam, Netherlands (2014). In 2017, ICMI comes to the US for the first time.
ICMI focuses on blending science and practice. MI is an ever-evolving approach informed by new data, and MI also evolves through the input of practitioners across many cultures, languages, and professions, regarding their experiences using MI in different settings with different focus areas. For those reasons, the ICMI conference is a place where both researchers and practitioners are welcome and valued, with a two-way focus on interchanging ideas and knowledge. As a scientific conference, ICMI focuses on research, program evaluation, and theory. Training and clinical presentations are more appropriate for the annual MINT forum.
A popular feature of the conference is the opportunity for onsite research consultations and collaborative opportunities involving many of the top MI researchers. This year's focus areas include implementation science, communications science, methodology and measurement, and theory and related science

This event is being run by MI Oceania with organisational support from HMA
This training reviews the essential elements of MI, provides detailed information on the process of adapting MI to groups across a variety of formats, including group set up and use of skills to shape group conversation.
Motivational interviewing (MI) is an empathic, goal-oriented therapeutic approach that elicits change in health, mental health, and addictive behaviors. MI was developed as an individual approach, and adapting MI to group interactions requires us to rethink the core practices to harness the power of group support, cohesion and momentum. This training reviews the essential elements of MI, provides detailed information on the process of adapting MI to groups across a variety of formats, including group set up and use of skills to shape group conversation. The workshop is highly experiential, leading participants through group practice exercises across the four phases of MI groups. The workshop aims to assist participants to:

Reviews of Wagner & Ingersoll (2013) Motivational Interviewing in Groups, Guilford Press
- This book is a response to the yearning for greater knowledge and skills and the practical integration of different perspectives and offers an exceedingly practical, accessible, and helpful roadmap to its use. As an instructive guide, this text not only affirms this method of practice in groups, but also offers a plethora of very helpful “how-tos” with an array of client populations. This book comes at a much-needed time in the field. - Social Work with Groups
- Wagner and Ingersoll link the four processes of MI - engaging, focusing, evoking and planning - to four phases of group development: engaging the group, exploring perspectives, broadening client perspectives and moving to action. These phases frame the heart of the book, with a bounty of practical suggestions for using MI in groups. This book will be a key reference point for the developments of MI in groups in the years ahead. - Addiction
- Motivational Interviewing in Groups promises to be an important-perhaps even seminal-book that may usher group MI into its eventual heyday of research and practice. Anyone who wants to develop an MI group should consult Motivational Interviewing in Groups. - Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books
Stay tuned for new events, workshops and training resources in 2016...
Dr William (Bill) Miller: Master Class Advanced Motivational Interviewing
November 2015
This event is being run by the Byron Clinic and is supported by MI Oceania
This 2-day advanced workshop is designed for professionals who are already familiar with Motivational Interviewing (MI) or have developed the foundational counselling skills on which Motivational Interviewing relies.
Assuming and building on basic training in Motivational Interviewing, this workshop with Dr. Miller will address areas where people often get stuck in developing clinical skilfulness. It will blend didactic presentations with demonstrations and ample opportunities for experiential skill practice. Because this is not an introductory workshop it is strongly recommended that participants should have had prior training in MI. Participants should have already developed skillfulness in client-centered reflective listening because facility with this skill is assumed in practice exercises. Introductory Motivational Interviewing workshops often devote significant time to developing empathic listening skills, whereas they are assumed in this advanced workshop. This workshop is being held in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
If you have any queries please contact us directly at [email protected] We look forward to seeing you at the workshop later in the year. |
One day International Symposium on MI 7 August 2015
ISMI offers a rare opportunity to engage with the latest thinking, challenges and opportunities in Motivational Interviewing and the broader field of effective communication and behaviour change. The event offers a friendly, stimulating environment to examine our practice, share ideas and sharpen skills. The driving curiosity behind ISMI is to ask “Is what we are doing working?” and “How can we do it better?” ISMI is open to clinicians, researchers, trainers, supervisors, managers and clients - together these different perspectives create a richer understanding of how to make the most of the conversations we have in our workplaces.
